Tips to keep your Porch Potty smelling Fresh

You’ve seen our Porch Potty online. You think it’s a great idea and would love to get one for your dynamite doggo.

But will it start to stink?

No one wants a smelly balcony or porch. As much as you love your furry family, dealing with constant smell of urine and feces doesn’t rank very high on your list of favorite things to do.

While there isn’t a one-size fits all solution, do these things to keep your Porch Potty fresh and odor-free:

Regularly rinsing. We could not have made cleaning any easier. Our perforated synthetic grass and draining system prevents urine and waste water from pooling, discouraging the build up of odor-causing proteins or bacteria.

Use real grass. In addition to dogs’ natural inclination to eliminate on grass, live grass also have odor-fighting properties by absorbing urine and waste water. While most use our synthetic grass without issue, others in our community members prefer real sod for the added help.

Clean with an enzymatic cleaner. Sometimes, no matter how often and thoroughly you rinse your Porch Potty, proteins in waste can build up over time causing a lingering odor. TURFtastic is an enzymatic cleaner formulated specifically for use with Porch Potty, breaking down those smelly proteins and restoring your balcony or porch to its original smell-free area.

Keep replacements on hand. A lot of factors can affect how strong your dog’s urine may smell. Their inherent chemistry, illness, diet and hydration levels can come into play, causing strong, persistent odors. Keep extra synthetic grass or flex tubing handy for those times when you just want a fresh start.

Don't forget to wipe down more than just the surface. Diligent cleaning of the grass and drain tray may still allow urine to collect and create smells in other places.

Sometimes urine can splash onto the surrounding ground or wicker frame as well as collect under the lip of the drain tray. If your dog is a leg lifter, you may want to invest in the Pee Pee Panel to keep splashing off the Porch Potty to a minimum.

Follow these tips consistently and you’ll find the routine that works for you and your pampered pooch. Warmer, more humid climates typically need more frequent cleaning and replacements. Your dog’s unique body chemistry and circumstances will affect frequency as well.

Depending how often your pup goes potty, check in on the Porch Potty to ensure odor isn’t building up. Give the grass surface a good rinse a few times a week to wash out any remaining urine underneath. For safe measure, spritz the Porch Potty with TURFtastic before the odor gets a chance to set in!

Yes, it will help the drainage system where a little water can pool in the tubing and both cause odors & slow down your draining, which could also add to odor issues. We use synthetic turf after finding sod too problematic, and replace it every 6 months. If we notice some odor, a hot water rinse of the turf and drainage system works wonders. After 3-4 months the hot water rinse breathes new life into the piping and the turf. Depending on the usage, we’ve been able to get 12 months out of the turf before. Hope this helps.

We LOVE OUR PORCH POTTY AND HAVE USED IT ON A CONDO DECK FOR 2 1/2 years. Would it help to just rinse with water in between our regular cleaning with turftastic. We replace the sod about every 6 months.
